Degree overview

The Master of Science Football Business qualification is designed for those who wish to develop an appreciation of key areas shaping the current landscape of the soccer industry. The program provides opportunities to engage in different aspects of soccer business including areas such as governance and regulation, consumer engagement, operational management and business development. From TV deals to player transfers, soccer is now a global, multi-billion-pound industry that is in need of more industry specific qualified individuals.

The soccer industry has many opportunities for budding professionals, and also poses numerous challenges on a personal and business level. Performance on the pitch can drastically affect club finances, so it is essential to have the knowledge and experience to be able to deal with such eventualities. This program will allow students to be aware of the diverse and often unique situations that impact on the soccer business, as well as recognise best practice and ethical choices.

Multiple time zone delivery

For the January intake, synchronous, live sessions will be delivered for the AEST/AEDT time zones to provide the greatest studying flexibility. To further enhance the learning experience around the world, there will be various touchpoints throughout the year for all students, including guest speaker sessions and networking opportunities at GIS' global hubs including Melbourne Cricket Ground and Wembley Stadium.

Students can also elect to start in September, and whilst those live sessions will be delivered for GMT/BST time zone, they are also recorded for students from around the world. Find out more

Online degree modules

Students will choose one option at the beginning of their course.

The main educational aims of the course are to:

  • To unite, inspire and equip the current and future leaders of the global sports industry, with the skills knowledge and network to take the world of sport to continually new heights.

Global Sports Leadership

Delivered across all GIS Master’s programs to provide a foundation of knowledge of leadership and its application in sport, the Global Sports Leadership module provides a global sporting context to underpin each degree specialism.

Covering fundamental leadership principles including culture, performance analysis, diversity and inclusion, leadership styles and innovation within a contemporary sporting context, this module allows students to develop a broad appreciation of the sports industry and become leaders in their field.

A core aspect of the module is to bring in global leaders from the pitch, the boardroom and the industry to enable student to access and reflect on real life and current industry experiences and insight. Many of the sessions will be shared across multiple GIS degree programs, allowing students to learn from and network with each other throughout the Global Sports Leadership module.

Entry requirements

Requirements overview

Ideally, you will already hold a Bachelor’s degree in a sports-related degree with the equivalent of a UK 2:1 grade from a UK ENIC recognised institution. A full range of equivalencies, can be found on the website of the UK Graduate Recruitment Bureau.

Applicants who hold a non-sport related degree, a degree classification lower than a 2:1 or significant professional experience without a degree will be considered on a case by case basis and may be required to submit a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate sports management experience in addition to passing a remote academic-led interview.

All applicants should submit a clear and comprehensive personal statement and provide a copy of their CV along with one academic and one professional reference.

Applicants whose first language is not English should submit evidence of their highest English language qualification with their application or expect to do so as a condition of an offer for a place on the programme.

  • Strong knowledge in the field of sports management suitable for Masters level academic work
  • Evidence of engagement with professional and academic literature/publications relevant to CPD
  • Ability to manage self-learning and professional duties where applicable
  • Evidence of ability to manage work independently
  • Proven track record of dealing with complex and multidisciplinary issues relevant to their chosen subject area

Career prospects

The program has been developed for those with aspirations towards senior management positions within the core functional departments of the soccer industry, spanning financial and accounting roles or operational roles within soccer, including the ability to rise to senior managerial roles due to the management aspect of the degree.

The broad, applied elements of this degree provide students with the skills and experience to progress and work either domestically or abroad in a multi-billion-pound global industry. GIS' ability to provide further Employment & Enrichment opportunities engages students in career development allowing students to find their place in the soccer industry.
