Degree overview

The Master of Science Football Coaching qualification is designed for those wishing to deepen their understanding of soccer coaching practices. The program provides opportunities to engage in different aspects of soccer coaching, including areas such as coaching philosophy, tactics and strategies, reflective practice and performance analysis. It is ideal for current professionals working within the soccer industry who prefer a more flexible mode of delivery instead of a purely campus-based program.

Students on this program have access to world-leading performance analysis tools from Hudl, the industry-standard software used by athletes, coaches and clubs across the globe. Alongside Hudl, students use Playmaker, Catapult and more.

Degree content 

This program is blended, meaning the majority of studies take place through live online sessions, recordings and tasks via the Online Hub. Students are required to learn on-campus at either GIS Miami, UCFB Wembley or UCFB Etihad. These two week long blocks of study enable you to immerse yourself in the practical elements of the course. 

The Online Hub is accessible on mobile devices including tablets, phones and laptops. The GIS Online Hub also has an app which you can download to access the program content. This means you can truly study while on the go and around your other commitments. Find out more.

Our blended students have access to the GIS Global Hubs and Insight Series - an unparalleled offering in the sports industry with Wembley and Etihad stadiums in the UK, and iconic stadiums in North America and Australia providing students with the opportunity to gain a truly global educational experience.

By having the opportunity to learn from the comfort of their own home or workplace, program participants can gain a further qualification to enhance their career prospects in a format that offers flexible hours, as well as the chance to dictate their own work-life balance around other commitments.

This program is designed for those who already work, or aspire to work, in the sports industry and offers the flexibility to allow participants to gain a Graduate degree qualification around their busy lifestyle.

Students will choose one option at the beginning of their course.

The main educational aims of the course are to:

  • Provide opportunities for students to solve complex problems related to the soccer industry.
  • Develop students’ ability to be able to think critically and creatively about soccer coaching.
  • Develop systematic knowledge and understanding of the theory and practice of coaching and training to enhance soccer performance.
  • Equip students with a range of research skills necessary to design and conduct applied research in a soccer context.
Global Sports Summits

Delivered across all GIS Master’s programs to provide a foundation of knowledge of leadership and its application in sport, the Global Sports Leadership module provides a global sporting context to underpin each degree specialism.

Covering fundamental leadership principles including culture, performance analysis, diversity and inclusion, leadership styles and innovation within a contemporary sporting context, this module allows students to develop a broad appreciation of the sports industry and become leaders in their field.

A core aspect of the module is to bring in global leaders from the pitch, the boardroom and the industry to enable student to access and reflect on real life and current industry experiences and insight. Many of the sessions will be shared across multiple GIS degree programs, allowing students to learn from and network with each other throughout the Global Sports Leadership module.

Entry requirements

Requirements overview

Applicants should hold a 2:1 honours degree or a recognised overseas equivalent. Applicants may be accepted with a 2:2 honours degree (or equivalent) provided that they can otherwise demonstrate a strong profile with 50% or above in their dissertation module. Or have professional qualifications of level 2 and above.

Professional experience and industry qualifications can be assessed for applicants without the standard entry requirements such as a B licence with 10 years or more experience in a professional coaching environment.

Candidates are required to hold a C licence (Level 2) certificate in coaching football additionally, it would be advantageous for candidates to already hold a B licence or equivalent.

All applicants are provided with information relating to student services, with whom they can make contact, should they require additional support or advice as well as information related to appropriate bursaries and funds. 

Applicants from non-majority English speaking countries will be asked for an English qualification which tests Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing and will be asked to achieve an IELTS of 6.0 (5.5) or equivalent.

Admissions/selection criteria
  • Strong knowledge in the field of sports coaching or sports management suitable for Masters level academic work
  • Hold C Licence coaching certificate 
  • Evidence of engagement with professional and academic literature/publications relevant to CPD
  • Ability to manage self-learning and professional duties where applicable
  • Evidence of ability to manage work independently
  • Proven track record of dealing with complex and multidisciplinary issues relevant to their chosen subject area
