Global Institute of Sport's (GIS) popular Master of Science International Sport Management (Online) program provides an unparalleled educational and experiential opportunity for aspiring sports leaders. Multiple Time Zone Delivery

For the January intake, synchronous, live sessions will be delivered in the early evening for the AEST/AEDT time zones to provide the greatest studying flexibility. To further enhance the learning experience around the world, there will be various touchpoints throughout the year for all students, including guest speaker sessions and networking opportunities at GIS' stadium hubs including Melbourne Cricket Ground and Wembley Stadium.

The first week of teaching for the January 2024 intake will be the week commencing 29th January 2024, with induction taking place online in the week commencing 22nd January 2024.

Students can also elect to start in September, and whilst those live sessions will be delivered for the GMT/BST time zone, they are also recorded for students from around the world. Find out more

Online Degree Modules

Students will choose one option at the beginning of their course. A minimum of two options will be available each academic year.

The main educational aims of the course are to:

  • To unite, inspire and equip the current and future leaders of the global sports industry, with the skills knowledge and network to take the world of sport to continually new heights.
  • Enable students to focus on the skills needed to work effectively as a manager in the international sports industry and enable them to become active, autonomous learners.
  • Equip students with a range of research skills necessary to carry out effective research in international sports management and encourage independent learning.
  • Encourage students to develop a critical awareness of the financial implications of managerial decisions.
  • Equip students with the tools to develop an effective coordinated international marketing strategy.
  • Identify the current business environment and the strategic considerations facing sports managers when developing a strategic plan in the international sports industry.
  • Develop the skills necessary to successfully manage a sporting venue and sporting events.
  • Produce a research project that can be in conjunction with a key stakeholder in the sport industry which offers insight into a key management issue within an international sports context.
  • Engage with and critically evaluate current themes in international sports management.
  • Create an environment in which students are able to relate theory to practice, solve problems, apply new and existing skills and show a critical awareness of the emerging issues facing the international sports industry.

Delivered across all GIS Master’s programs to provide a foundation of knowledge of leadership and its application in sport, the Global Sports Leadership module provides a global sporting context to underpin each degree specialism.

Covering fundamental leadership principles including culture, performance analysis, diversity and inclusion, leadership styles and innovation within a contemporary sporting context, this module allows students to develop a broad appreciation of the sports industry and become leaders in their field.

A core aspect of the module is to bring in global leaders from the pitch, the boardroom and the industry to enable student to access and reflect on real life and current industry experiences and insight. Many of the sessions will be shared across multiple GIS degree programs, allowing students to learn from and network with each other throughout the Global Sports Leadership module.

As part of your modules UD7012 Global Sustainable Sports Operations and UD7013 Managing Global Strategy, Distance with Attendance students will come together to undertake short but intense blocks of taught face-to-face lectures, seminars and workshops. These two ‘residential blocks’ will take place in March and June 2024 and will incorporate 30 hours of face to face theoretical sessions. Providing students with the opportunity to bring together the theories and concepts explored during virtual delivery.

Students should note that all travel arrangements to undertake the residential blocks is the responsibility of the student, and all travel and accommodation should be booked independently. Any visa or entry requirements to complete this at the selected GIS campus is the students responsibility.

Entry requirements

Requirements overview

Applicants should hold a Bachelor (Honours) degree with Upper Second Class Honours or a Bachelor (Ordinary) degree with 70-75%. Applicants may be accepted with a Bachelor (Honours) degree with Lower Second Class Honours or Bachelor (Ordinary) degree with 60-65% provided they can otherwise demonstrate a strong profile.

Professional experience and industry qualifications can be assessed for applicants without the standard entry requirements.

All applicants should submit a clear and comprehensive personal statement and provide a copy of their CV along with one academic and one professional reference.

Applicants from non-majority English speaking countries will be asked for an English qualification which tests Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing and will be asked to achieve an overall IELTS score of 6.0 (minimum of 5.5 in each section) or recognised equivalent.

Career prospects

The program has been developed for those with aspirations towards senior management positions within the core functional departments of the sports industry, spanning financial and accounting roles or operational roles within sport, including the ability to rise to senior managerial roles due to the management aspect of the degree.

The broad, applied elements of this degree provide students with the skills and experience to progress and work either domestically or abroad in a multi-billion-pound global industry. Global Summits

All Global Institute of Sport students and graduates get optional access to GIS Global Summits in the UK, Miami, New York, Toronto and Melbourne. These week-long events take place every year at each stadium hub and include guest speaker sessions, networking opportunities and live sports experiences allowing students to immerse themselves in the local sports industry in the UK, US, Canada and Australia, regardless of whether they are studying on-campus or online and wherever they are based in the world. Distance (with attendance) students undertaking the mandatory residential element of their course should note that all travel and accommodation should be booked independently. UCFB/GIS will provide suggested accommodation as a guide only due to the proximity to the site of course delivery.

Payment plans

Tuition fees can be paid in the following instalments:

  • Six payments of $3,325 for part-time students - one payment per semester, approximately every four months
  • Three payments of $6,650 for full-time students - one payment per semester, approximately every four months
