Degree overview

This program provides students with the opportunity to develop systematic knowledge and understanding of the theory and practice of coaching to enhance both individual and team performance. It also equips students with a range of research skills necessary to design and conduct applied research in a sports context. The course is available to study either full-time, over one year, or part-time over two.
Program participants will evaluate a range of traditional and contemporary models of leadership, and review the core components that underpin expertise in sports coaching. Students will have access to clubs across the football pyramid, as well as first-class teaching, learning and coaching provision from professionals with backgrounds in both academia and professional football.

Students on this program have access to world-leading performance analysis tools from Hudl, the industry-standard software used by athletes, coaches and clubs across the globe.

Degree content

The MSc Sports Coaching (Blended) course is designed for those wishing to deepen their understanding of coaching practices. The program provides opportunities to engage in different aspects of coaching including new modules exploring high performance culture, talent development alongside tactics and strategies, and more. 

It is ideal for current professionals working within the sports industry or those who aspire to work within the professional game.

This program is available to study in a blended format with the majority of content online and two intensive one-week periods of face-to-face teaching in Melbourne. These two week long blocks of study enable you to immerse yourself in the practical elements of the course.

The blocks of in-person teaching for the January 2024 intake will take place in Melbourne in February and July 2024.

Online studies take place through live online sessions, recordings and tasks via the Online Hub. Live online sessions are delivered in the early evening for the AEDT/AEST time zones. All sessions are recorded and therefore accessible for students across the globe.

The Online Hub is accessible on mobile devices including tablets, phones and laptops. The GIS Online Hub also has an app which you can download to access the program content. This means you can truly study while on the go and around your other commitments. Find out more.

Regular guest speaker sessions, networking opportunities and a Global Summit will take place in person at Melbourne Cricket Ground as well as online throughout the year, immersing you in the Australian and global sports industry.

Entry requirements

Requirements overview

Applicants should hold a Bachelor (Honours) degree with Upper Second Class Honours or a Bachelor (Ordinary) degree with 70-75%. Applicants may be accepted with a Bachelor (Honours) degree with Lower Second Class Honours or Bachelor (Ordinary) degree with 60-65% provided they can otherwise demonstrate a strong profile.

Professional experience and industry qualifications can be assessed for applicants without the standard entry requirements.

All applicants should submit a clear and comprehensive personal statement and provide a copy of their CV along with one academic and one professional reference.

Applicants from non-majority English speaking countries will be asked for an English qualification which tests Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing and will be asked to achieve an overall IELTS score of 6.0 (minimum of 5.5 in each section) or recognised equivalent.

Career prospects

The multi-faceted world of football requires modern football coaches to have highly developed skills and an in-depth knowledge of the principles of football coaching. The program has been developed for those who have graduated from coaching or relevant degree programs or coaches currently coaching within the game who want to develop their knowledge and skill set further or form part of their CPD. The broad, applied elements of this degree provide students with the skills and experience to progress and work either domestically or abroad in a multi-billion-pound global industry. GIS' ability to provide further Employability and Enrichment opportunities engages students in career development allowing students to find their place in the football industry.

All Global Institute of Sport students and graduates get optional access to GIS Global Summits in the UK, Miami, New York, Toronto and Melbourne. These week-long events take place every year at each stadium hub and include guest speaker sessions, networking opportunities and live sports experiences allowing students to immerse themselves in the local sports industry in the UK, US, Canada and Australia, regardless of whether they are studying on-campus or online and wherever they are based in the world. Global Sports Leadership

Delivered across all GIS Master’s programmes to provide a foundation of knowledge of leadership and its application in sport, the Global Sports Leadership module provides a global sporting context to underpin each degree specialism.

Covering fundamental leadership principles including culture, performance analysis, diversity and inclusion, leadership styles and innovation within a contemporary sporting context, this module allows students to develop a broad appreciation of the sports industry and become leaders in their field.

A core aspect of the module is to bring in global leaders from the pitch, the boardroom and the industry to enable student to access and reflect on real life and current industry experiences and insight. Many of the sessions will be shared across multiple GIS degree programmes, allowing students to learn from and network with each other throughout the Global Sports Leadership module.
