The Global Institute of Sport (GIS) is excited to welcome elite athlete Asha Philip to one of our postgraduate degree courses this September. The Olympic medallist will be starting a Master's degree in International Sport Management with GIS.
Philip made her mark early in her career, winning gold at the IAAF World Youth Championships in 2007. Since then, she has represented Great Britain in the Commonwealth Games, European Championships, and the Olympic Games in Rio and Tokyo. When asked about the feeling after winning an Olympic medal, Philip said: “It is a shock! You think ‘What is happening?’ I could not believe we won an Olympic medal; it is unreal!”
Now, as she transitions from the track to the classroom, Asha is ready for a new kind of challenge. “Going back to education is a good challenge, and I always like to learn and challenge myself!”
Asha is most excited about joining her classmates and learning from industry experts at GIS, though she admits there’s a mix of excitement and nerves. “I am most looking forward to meeting my classmates and tutors to embark on a new journey together which is quite exciting but also scary, but I am looking forward to a new challenge. I am scared, but in a great way – like I am about to race”
James McKeown, Chief Operating Officer of GIS, shared his excitement about Asha joining the program:
"We're so excited to have someone as accomplished, inspiring and driven as Asha joining us for her Master's degree at GIS. Asha is a perfect example of how an elite athlete mentality can take you to the very top of your profession, so l can't wait to see her thriving on her course with us and meeting likeminded, ambitious classmates.
"Having watched her representing her country and bringing home countless medals at Olympics and World Championships, we're proud to be able to help her prepare for her 'second career' as a leader in the sports industry."
