A Global Institute of Sport student has been speaking about the fantastic experience he gained during the recent International Sports Convention in London.

Richard Ali Imaghodor, who studies MSc Football Communications and Digital Marketing, was a social media assistant at the global event, creating quality content ideas throughout the convention.

The convention, held this year at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, invites more than 1,000 delegates and 100 guest speakers for multiple business conferences over several days.

Richard worked at the annual conference, now in its 15th year, alongside undergraduate UCFB BA (Hons) Sports Business and Sports Broadcasting student Alastair Thompson.

The convention not only offered Richard and Alastair incredible work experience, but also fantastic networking opportunities.

Richard said, looking back on the event: “It feels great to have a very well-known event be added to my CV. It’s fantastic to gain such experience and be part of the social media production of it.

“It’s great not only because the ISC is such a huge event, but also it’s fantastic for me to gain even more experience in a role I really love to have full time in the football industry.”

Speaking about his time so far at the Global Institute of Sport, he said: “I am having a pretty good time at GIS. I am enjoying the lectures, the assignments and also the feeling of studying at Wembley never gets old.

“It was a challenge at the start of the course in terms of adapting to what lecturers expect from you at postgraduate level, but I’ve started to really enjoy my time here.

“The placements and internships here are unique and you will not find them anywhere else to be honest.”

He added: “100 per cent, I would recommend UCFB students to continue studying here with GIS. The courses and lectures are tough as expected at postgraduate level but there’s so much to learn when you really get started with one of the courses here.”

He finished: “For me, experience is KEY. It’s absolutely vital in the sporting industry. You got to show employers that you have been there and done that for any potential roles in the industry.

“Get into work placements, internships, getting some experience in your field is essential and it’s a great start to kicking off your career in sport. Even if the placements are not paid, it’s a step in the right direction, that’s how hundreds of employees in sport today started their careers.

“Get that experience, showcase yourself to employees and just be patient. Everyone will find it difficult to get into employment in sport, but patience is also vital. Your opportunity will come if you keep being persistent and working hard to gaining experience.”
