Multiple sports industry professionals and executives have been speaking to us about our Certificate in Elite Player Care and Wellbeing course.
The course has been designed to support professionals and enhance their practice through a multidisciplinary understanding of player welfare.
Speaking about the course itself, course leader Dr Richard Elliott said: “This is a two-day course at Wembley, and we’ve got delegates who have joined us from across the world.
“They’ve come here to learn how they can support the mental and emotional wellbeing of athletes across a broad range of different sports.”
Delegates from across the UK, Europe and the globe took part in the course and spoke very highly of it.
One of those was Rita Mankowska, who works at Professional Footballers Australia as head of player development.
When asked why she enrolled onto the course, she said: “In Australia, there is a focus on supporting career development and supporting athletes through dual careers.
“I thought it was also important to focus on the wellbeing and mental health of athletes.”
Former PGA golfer Jacob van der Flierdt said: “I want to work in player care and athlete wellbeing. The course gave me a great overview and some great insights on how to support athletes.”
Leigh Nicol, player liaison for Crystal Palace Women said: “I probably wasn’t aware of just how many people in elite sport environments are suffering.
“It’s not always those who are the obvious sufferers. Sometimes it’s the quieter ones and there’s not many people who don’t have a battle.”
Many of the delegates who had travelled from abroad to London for the course were blown away by our iconic Wembley Campus.
Rosa Mankowska added: “I’m an Australian, but Wembley is world-renowned and the place to be, and it’s really special to feel a part of it.”
Jose Pires, head of player care at Sporting Lisbon, said: “Wembley Stadium is an amazing stadium. Nothing can compare.”
