A student has been talking to us about how immensely proud he is having secured a scholarship for 2023-24 at the Global Institute of Sport.

GIS has welcomed 18 worldwide scholars from our groundbreaking and record September 2023 intake. One of those is Dillan Purewall.

Dillan has been successful in his application by receiving the Dean’s Progression Scholarship for 2023-24.

Prior to his postgraduate studies in MSc Football Coaching and Analysis at GIS, Dillan was a UCFB student studying BA (Hons) Football Coaching and Management.

Now on the scholarship, Dillan will receive financial support alongside his studies, as well as mentorship from Dr Mike Walsh.

He will also have the chance to attend one of GIS’ annual global sports summits.

When asked about how he feels about being granted a scholarship, Dillan said: “For me to receive my scholarship not only makes me incredibly proud, but I also feel it will have a great impact on me and my ambitions.

“I think the contacts, knowledge and opportunities Mike is providing me with and can provide me with will expand my knowledge base, experience and network massively.

“This will give me the opportunity to get to know those in roles I want to have during my career and learn from them as much as possible before going back into my own environment and applying the things I’ve learned and discussed.

“I also feel having Mike to bounce ideas off and discuss current hurdles and future plans will allow me to overcome any challenges in efficient and effective manners to continue my progression in the industry.”

He added: “I chose to progress to postgraduate studies because I wanted to further explore my field of coaching and analysis in greater detail and gain even more knowledge and learning in different aspects.

“I also felt having a Master’s would help distinguish me from others in the field and give me a little something extra in terms of learning, experience and qualifications.

“My advice to any other undergraduate students would be to consider whether you’re interested in exploring your field in greater detail and whether or not you feel the Master’s award will give help you stand out from those around you in an incredibly competitive industry.”
