The Global Institute of Sport is delighted to be continuing our partnership with Women Onside, which sees us extend our female-focused scholarship alongside the organisation.

Women Onside is an Australia-based organisation which shares GIS’ ambition to promote the growth of female involvement across the global football industry.

The partnership between GIS and Women Onside brings many benefits to both organisations, such as Women Onside providing work experience and research opportunities to GIS students.

We also collaborate on multiple initiatives for women’s football in Australia, such as many events and providing guest speaker and thought leadership opportunities.

This is in addition to the Women Onside and Global Institute of Sport Scholarship.

The scholarship, which has been continued for our September 2024 intake, is aimed at any female looking to further their football coaching and/or analysis career in Australia.

Any GIS MSc Football Coaching and Analysis applicants are eligible for the scholarship, which looks to enhance opportunities for the next generation of female sports industry leaders.

Benefits of the scholarship include:

  • 15% tuition fee discount (approx. $3,000 AUD)
  • Applied research project on a Women Onside challenge
  • Mentorship with a Women Onside board member
  • Work experience through Women Onside
  • Free access to a GIS Summit

To be eligible for the scholarship, you must be an Australia-based MSc Football Coaching and Analysis (distance with attendance) applicant with at least three months of experience in football.

The 2023-24 recipient of the scholarship is Anouk Meereboer, who said: “With the network that Women Onside has, they have linked me really quickly with women that have a lot of knowledge and experience in the football world.

“My mentors have offered me support, that I will definitely be using over the next period of time.

“While coaching, it's great to be able to bounce ideas and concerns with others, as well as gain feedback on your coaching, so I hope through this my mentors are able to push me to the next level.”

Speaking about the partnership, Women Onside chair Cheryl Downes said: "We're delighted to partner with Global Institute of Sport to continue our collaborative work to provide learning opportunities to women working in football in Australia.

“Last year, we provided an excellent opportunity for a football coach who is now being mentored by two incredible mentors while they complete their studies with GIS, one a former Matildas player and the other a former Matildas manager.

“This year we're hoping to build on this by not only providing another fantastic scholarship opportunity but also to collaborate on initiatives and events to contribute to the legacy of last year's record-breaking FIFA Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand."
