A UCFB and GIS graduate has been speaking to us about how her degree helps her in her coaching role at the Football Association and Manchester United.
Jemma Entwistle studied BA (Hons) Sports Business and Coaching at UCFB, before going on to study a postgraduate degree in MSc Football Coaching and Analysis at GIS.
Jemma currently works as a PGA Coach at Manchester United Women, coaching the U16s girls’ team, which competes in nationwide FA competitions.
Speaking about her time at the Global Institute of Sport, she said: “I would encourage students to consider postgraduate study with GIS.
“The level of detail you go into within a postgraduate study is second to none.
“First and foremost, it’s really enjoyable to be around people who want to be there and learn as much as you do.
“The more opportunities you can get from completing a postgraduate degree, because you’re at that higher level, the connections you can make opens just so many more doors.”
Jemma said: “The best thing about working in football for me is that every day is different. You’re always planning for something different, whether it’s an opponent, working in new places, travelling the country for matches.
“For me, coaching is about making connections with people, having conversations and building your network, supporting people and ultimately seeing where they end up.”
She added: “Working for Manchester United, obviously it’s a global club, which brings with it a lot of pressure, wearing the club badge and representing the brand every day.
“But also, the size of the club and the demand of your role is always growing. It’s just holding yourself to the standard that Manchester United expects.
“You know as you walk in the door, that this is what it means to work for Manchester United.”
When asked about her time at UCFB, Jemma said: “The work experience I got during my time at UCFB were pivotal.
“Having practical examples alongside your studies is super important, so being able to take what you’re learning in lectures and seminars and give it a go straight away in the real world.
“But also, the opportunities you get through networking at UCFB, so meeting the right people at the right time, you can build that portfolio and secure positions within the football industry.”
