Meet Your Future Lecturers: Dr Alexander Chrysanthou

Behind every GIS programme, a team of expert lecturers is dedicated to providing students with the knowledge and network they need to succeed in the sports industry.

Dr Alexander Chrysanthou is the MA Sports Agency course leader here at GIS, providing students with years of lecturing experience as well as an impressive portfolio of work in sports law and agency.

With an undergraduate degree in economics before completing his LLB and PhD in Law, Alex spent seven years lecturing at both the University of Winchester and the University of Southampton, and told GIS: “My passion for Sports Law stems from combining my legal expertise with a lifelong love of sport.

“I enjoy teaching it because it empowers future professionals to navigate a global, fast-changing industry with confidence, integrity, and real-world insight.”

Alex specialises in sports law and governance as a lecturer and researcher, as well as having experience with medical and criminal law throughout his career.

Between 2016 and 2019, Alex worked as a legal consultant in sports law before working with us at GIS. Alex also spoke further about his experience and the work he has done in sports law and agency.

“I have facilitated meetings with the European Football Agents Association,” he began, “enabling networking and the sharing of best practice with some of the world’s foremost agents.”

“I developed the Agency Hub, providing a platform for agents and lawyers to discuss and learn about areas of mutual interest. I have also taught a range of legal and commercial skills to agents.”

On the course, our lecturers aim to teach students what it takes to be a sports agent through modules that provide both legal theory and practical skills, such as:

  • Athlete and Agency Management
  • Mentoring and Coaching Skills for Agents
  • Legal Principles for Sports Agents
  • Global Sports Leadership
  • FIFA Football Agency Regulations (Option)
  • Contemporary Issues in Sport (Option)

Alongside Alex, world-renowned agents also teach on GIS’ MA Sports Agency. These include Rafaela Pimenta, whose clients include Erling Haaland and Paul Pogba, and Dr Erkut Sogut, who secured Mesut Ozil’s move to Arsenal from Real Madrid back in 2013.

“Utilising our specialist sports academics and vast industry network, this course will equip students with the key areas of athlete and sports organisation representation,” Alex added.

Finally, we asked Alex for the one skill that the course provides to students that will help them on their way to being successful sports agents, and he replied: “The ability to negotiate effectively,  combining legal knowledge, commercial awareness, and interpersonal skills to secure the best outcomes for clients while maintaining ethical and professional standards.”
