Throughout the programme, you’ll examine what drives high-performing football organisations, exploring leadership approaches, organisational culture, and strategic planning. You’ll learn how successful clubs create and sustain performance-driven environments, analysing how values, behaviours, and talent management contribute to long-term success both on and off the pitch.
In addition, you’ll develop a strong understanding of football operations management, covering areas such as stadium and facility operations, matchday experience, event management, and community engagement. You’ll explore how technology, sustainability, and financial planning influence modern football operations, while applying theory to real-world case studies. By the end of the course, you’ll be equipped to analyse and contribute to the effective running of football organisations, with a clear pathway to further study and career progression.
In this module you will appraise operations management principles in the wider football industry. The module will cover a broad selection of topics including, but not limited to, stadium technology, multi-use stadium operations, matchday experience, stadium capacity calculations, sustainable development policies, football facility financial management, event management principles and community engagement.
The aim of this module is to assess multiple approaches of operations management for football organisations and football facilities.
You will be introduced to academic theories which will be related to case studies from the global football industry. You will be expected to critically explore academic theories, governance regulations, and industry practices related to the content of this module.
The module will help you to explore, interpret and apply operations management principles and consolidate these into long-term strategies for a football organisation.
This module explores the key components that contribute to the creation and maintenance of high-performance clubs and organisations, with a particular focus on football and team-based environments. Participants will critically examine the characteristics of high-performing environments and the strategies used to build and sustain them.
The module begins by defining what constitutes a high-performance organization and explores the aims and objectives that guide their development. Students will investigate organisational politics, leadership approaches, and strategic planning as tools to drive performance both on and off the pitch.
A significant focus is placed on organisational culture including values, beliefs, and behaviors and how culture is developed and embedded over time. The module also examines the role of talent management in nurturing both individual and collective potential within the organisation. By the end of the module, learners will understand how to design, implement, and sustain high-performance environments that achieve success in all areas of operation.
Dr Paul Stolk is Program Convenor for the Master of International Sport Business and Master of Sports Analytics, delivered in Sydney from 2026 through a partnership between Global Institute of Sport and Newcastle Business School at the University of Newcastle, Australia. His academic career sits at the intersection of sport, tourism, hospitality and business education, with a strong focus on how universities and industry collaborate to develop future professionals.
Paul is recognised for his leadership in work-integrated learning (WIL), having designed and scaled placement-based courses and a broader WIL “ecosystem” that connects students with a wide range of sport, tourism, and events organisations. His teaching is grounded in experiential learning and authentic assessment, using internships, live industry projects, site visits, webinars and creative tasks that mirror contemporary professional practice in sport and the wider visitor economy.
Paul’s research centres on the relationships between tourism, sport, and sustainable regional development. Current projects include examining employment and careers in tourism, hospitality and events in the Hunter Region; investigating the relationship between sport, coal mining and regional communities in areas experiencing mine closures; and evaluating the social impacts of agritourism events in peri-urban regions. Together, these projects explore how sport and related visitor economy sectors can support more sustainable, resilient regional communities while creating meaningful experiences for participants, fans, and visitors.

Experience: Experience of sports industry or business – evidenced by prior professional experience or relevancy of degree. Applicants without this but strong profile to still be considered.
English Language Requirements: English language qualifications: Applicants from non-majority English speaking countries will be asked for an English qualification which tests Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing and will be asked to achieve an overall IELTS score of 6.5 (minimum of 6.0 in each section) or recognised equivalent. Note that applicants from these countries who have studied to degree level in English to be accepted
Flexible Entry Requirements: Applications that do not meet the standard entry requirements but demonstrate relevant education and/or work and/or life experience in the course subject area are welcomed.
