For students who want to build a successful career in the sports industry, a mix of academic knowledge and industry experience is vital.
To provide this combination, Global Institute of Sport (GIS) have partnered with Community Athletic Solutions (CAS) to help students secure paid work while they study, building both their CVs and wider networks.
Collaborating with foundations of Premier League clubs such as Everton and Aston Villa, CAS offer over 500 placement opportunities across the USA, with the GIS U.S Work Placement Programme pairing students with roles that suit their skillset and career ambitions.
This has supported GIS students like Colin Benjamin, who studies on our MSc Performance Analysis in Football programme, to earn valuable experience across a range of youth sports organisations.
Studying with GIS part-time, Colin began his placement with CAS in January 2026, and his role as a Youth Soccer Development Coach has provided him with the unique opportunity to be part of football development in the US during what is a landmark year for the sport in North America.
“Taking part in the CAS opportunity through GIS has been an incredibly rewarding experience, particularly during a FIFA World Cup year in the US,” he told GIS.
“It has provided valuable exposure to grassroots football development while allowing me to apply my coaching and sports knowledge in a real-world environment.”
Working with Manchester Soccer Club in Hertford, Connecticut, Colin noted the welcoming environment as one of his “standout positives” so far, making the transition into coaching in the US a smooth one.
His previous work includes roles in media and communications for organisations such as CONCACAF and ESPN, and is expanding his expertise through his current involvement in coaching.
“Overall, it has been a fantastic international learning experience that has helped me grow professionally, develop confidence and gain first-hand insight into football development in the U.S.”
For students who secure a CAS work and study role through GIS, dedicated visa and placement support is provided, alongside accommodation and a minimum salary of $26,000.
