Coaching in the US: Callum Wood Discusses his Experience Working and Studying in California through GIS x CAS

Through Global Institute of Sport’s partnership with Community Athletic Solutions (CAS), students have exclusive access to real working environments while receiving premium sports education.

Gaining access to CAS’ network, which includes the Premier League foundations such as Everton and Aston Villa, students are paired with roles that suit their skillset and career ambitions.

This article puts GIS student Callum Wood in the spotlight, who moved to the US to explore CAS’ coaching opportunities while he studies his degree in MSc Football Coaching and Analysis.

“The experience so far has been nothing short of exciting and rewarding,” Callum told GIS, having arrived in the US in June 2024.

Working as a coach for Exeter City FC in England, he went out to the US to coach football summer camps before securing a role with Inter Atlanta FC at the end of his first year there.

He then spent time exploring the country’s East coast before settling in Southern California and joining his current club SoCal Reds FC.

“It’s been a fantastic journey. CAS gave me the chance to head to the West Coast, where I’ve been truly impressed by the vibrant culture, distinctive coaching styles, and, of course, the incredible weather.

“This opportunity has allowed me to grow significantly as a coach,” he continued, supported by his part-time studies with GIS.

“I’ve been able to apply the theories and techniques I’ve learned in my studies directly into my coaching sessions. Additionally, I’ve started contributing to the club’s analysis efforts, putting my analytical skills into practical use.”

Alongside his studies and full-time role, Callum has continued his professional development by completing his US Soccer D Licence and attending a GIS residential in Miami.

Accessing insight into Inter Miami’s academy, Callum and fellow students studied multiple academy fixtures, as well as a first-team game, before putting their learning into practice by delivering a live session on the final day.

Most recently attending a live World Cup fixture in Los Angeles, Callum is making the most of his time in the US through GIS x CAS.

“The support and flexibility provided by both SoCal Reds FC and GIS have allowed me to maintain a healthy balance between work and study, which has been crucial for my development in both areas.

“Although I’m only at the beginning of this journey,” he concluded, “I’m excited to see how far I can push myself as a coach, what new skills I can acquire, and how much more I can contribute to the club.”
