In the tight-knit sports industry, sometimes a single conversation can open the door to a variety of career opportunities. For Katie Fuller, who studied MSc International Sport Management at GIS, it was speaking to someone in the industry that helped her discover that a dream career in sport was possible, and now, Katie has landed a role at the NBA.

After school, Katie began studying a degree in English and American studies at undergraduate level, and though she enjoyed her time, she told GIS that after graduating, “I was lost.”
Despite a love for sport, Katie hadn’t considered a career in the industry as a viable option. Instead, she spent time working in Thailand and the US, having also worked for the NFL as part of their Flag in Schools programme.
“I became an Au Pair in Oregon and California for two years, it was during this year that I had one of the most pivotal conversations of my life.
“I met one of the founders of Bleacher Report, and he showed me how a career in sport was truly possible for me, that I didn’t have to be a player or a coach, and that I had so many skills that could be applied to other areas,” Katie explained.
“I did however feel that I need some more understanding of the business of sport. That night, after a quick google search, I came across GIS, and the rest is history!”
Katie recently graduated from GIS with a distinction, and on her time here, said: “GIS has been the most incredible experience for me.
“I have learnt so much and grown professionally. The depth of the degree really opens your eyes to every area of sports business, and the flexibility with assignments allows you to tailor your research to your own interests.”
Before graduating from GIS, Katie secured her current role at the NBA as an Events Intern, and soon after travelled to the NBA Abu Dhabi Games 2025 as part of her work. She is also a co-founder of GIS’ first ever society, SPARK, which is dedicated to championing women in sport.

During her studies, Katie took the opportunity to attend one of our Global Sports Summits in Miami. These are exciting residentials that our students can attend at GIS hubs all around the world, involving talks from industry leaders, exclusive access to sporting venues, and networking opportunities, as well as delivering a presentation to Inter Miami staff members.
From not being aware a career in sport was possible to working in her “dream job” in such a short space of time, Katie finished with some words of advice: “It’s never too late to do what you love.”
