GIS x The Powerhouse Project: Empowering the Next Generation of Women in Sport

The Global Institute of Sport (GIS) is proud to celebrate its growing partnership with the Powerhouse Project, an initiative dedicated to creating unparalleled opportunities for students to learn from and connect with trailblazers in the women’s sports industry.

Co-founded by former professional players and media presenters Mollie and Rosie Kmita, the Powerhouse Project is breaking down systemic barriers for women in sport. As members of the GIS Industry Advisory Board, they work closely with the education team to shape academic and industry experiences, empowering the next generation of sports professionals to become leaders within their chosen field. Whether in coaching, media, or business, they champion individuals who are purposeful, passionate, and powerful. Our values of entrepreneurship, courage, and impact are intrinsically aligned.

The UEFA B Prep Programme Opening Ceremony: Celebrating Game-Changers

On Friday, 7th March, 2025, a group of GIS students, and members of the Women in Sport Society had the privilege of attending the highly anticipated opening ceremony of the Powerhouse Project’s UEFA B Prep Programme at St George’s Park. Held just before International Women’s Day, the event marked the launch of the programme’s fourth and largest cohort—bringing together 34 female football coaches from diverse backgrounds and experience levels to help them build long-term, successful careers in the industry.

The ceremony featured alumni and industry professionals who shared how the programme has shaped their careers and communities, including:

  • Mollie and Rosie Kmita – Co-Founders of the Powerhouse Project, Media Presenters at Sky Sport & Nike
  • Charlotte Reader – Club and Feds Business Manager: FA & PL at Nike
  • Russell Wood – Head of Commercial at Brighton & Hove Albion FC
  • Perry Northeast – Women’s First Team Coach at Brighton & Hove Albion FC
  • Danielle Boyd, Indi Davis & Roya Mehdizadeh-Valoujerdy – Powerhouse Project Alumni
  • Rebecca Garlick – National Coach Development Lead Women’s and Girls at the FA
  • Tanya Oxtoby – Manager of the Northern Ireland Women’s National Team

“The Powerhouse Project experience is one of the many invaluable doors GIS has opened for students, providing industry exposure, skill development, and an incredible support network. As a founding member of the Women in Sport Society, I’m inspired by the camaraderie and strength of the Powerhouse community and strive to contribute meaningfully to the women’s sports industry.”

The Power of Collaboration: Impact & Legacy

As part of the Powerhouse Operations team for the day, GIS students assisted with venue setup, prepared presentation kits for coaches, and coordinated with the Sports Direct media team. Working alongside like-minded individuals and hearing first-hand accounts of resilience and success reinforced our shared responsibility to drive progress in the women’s sports industry.

A key takeaway from the event? We rise by lifting others. In a male-dominated industry, mentorship and community are our greatest assets. GIS and the Powerhouse Project are committed to fostering this network, ensuring that students and alumni have access to the resources, guidance, and connections they need—wherever they are in their careers or the world.

“I’ve made these friends, now I’m going to be able to live my dream, and they’re all going to be supporting me.”
Roya Mehdizadeh-Valoujerdy, Powerhouse Alumnus & Chelsea Women U16s Head Coach
