Over the summer, GIS teamed up with The Sporting News (TSN) to bring internship opportunities to students aspiring to work in the media industry.
Founded in 1886, The Sporting News is the oldest sports publication in the United States. With over 450 million monthly impressions, the outlet – online-only since 2012 – hosted a series of interviews to find the perfect GIS candidates to bring on board.
One of two successful applicants, Molly Glinn is part of our MSc Sports Marketing and Media cohort, having joined GIS in 2024.
Throughout the internship, Molly supported TSN with its coverage of the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 as the Lionesses lifted the trophy for the second time. During her time with TSN, Molly travelled to Switzerland to cover the tournament, creating an original series of articles titled: “Remember Her Name.”
Pitched as part of her interview process, the series highlighted some of the competition’s younger, lesser-known and underrepresented players, offering a unique deep-dive that hadn’t been done before.
Speaking to GIS about the internship, Molly looked back on an “incredible experience,” adding: “With every article I wrote, I felt part of a larger, inspiring story—not just for the athletes, but for the future of women’s sport.”
Lauren Kay, Senior Account Manager at TSN, played a large role in the recruitment process and told us about the value that GIS students brought to the organisation.
“It was fantastic. In the month they were here with us, they helped us expand our coverage of sports like darts and F1, while also shining a spotlight on the Lionesses’ success in Switzerland.”
Together, the students published over 50 articles for the TSN website, underlining the responsibility given to them throughout the internship. They also worked on their own projects, which they presented to senior TSN staff.
“The feedback highlighted just how professional, thoughtful and well-crafted the presentations were,” Lauren added.
For Molly, travelling to Switzerland to cover the record-breaking tournament as both a writer and a fan offered her a unique opportunity— something she cites as the most enjoyable aspect of her internship.
“It was exciting to be part of a team that allowed me the freedom to create my own series, who was excited about my dedication to amplifying the stories of incredible athletes.
“It was a privilege to contribute to such a passionate team,” she continued, before reflecting on her biggest takeaways from TSN.
“Asking questions about different aspects of the company meant I learned more than I could have imagined. I also gained a deeper appreciation for the collaborative nature of sports media, where teamwork is essential for success.”
Molly also shared advice for other GIS students seeking internships in the sports industry, emphasising the importance of finding your niche, as well as having the confidence to pitch your own ideas.
“Always have a fresh perspective or idea that you can bring to the table,” she began.
“My ‘Remember Her Name’ series with TSN was a perspective not taken by them or any other similar outlet before – making it a unique selling point for TSN’s coverage of the tournament.
“I’d advise students not to be afraid of asking for what they want. If you’d like to meet certain people, write about certain things, or find out about different areas of the organisation they’re working with, just ask!
“Put as much emphasis on pushing yourself to get what you want out of the placement as you would on meeting the employer’s needs.”
At GIS, we aim to provide students with the access and network they need to gain as much real-world experience as they can in the sports industry. As Molly’s story shows, internships can be a fantastic way to get your foot in the door.
For further opportunities to work with TSN, keep an eye on GIS channels in the near future—as well as our other internship opportunities in both Belgium and Jamaica!
