This time last year, we announced the launch of the world’s first scholarship dedicated to South Asians in Football Leadership. The first recipient of the scholarship was Nottingham Forest footballer, Millie Chandarana, and we’re thrilled to name GIS student Mikhela Treon as this year’s winner!
Mikhela, who is studying for a master’s in Sports Marketing and Media,a, shared her excitement about receiving the scholarship, calling it a “massive honour.”
“The industry is more open than ever now”, she said, “and representation is really key in inspiring younger people into the industry through all levels- from grassroots to executive positions.”
As with Millie last year, the scholarship means Mikhela receives mentorship from Sky Sports journalist Dev Trehan. Mikhela described Dev as, “a trailblazer in the sports journalism industry for Asians and a great example not just for me but for any Asian or minority ethnic person aspiring to enter the sports industry.”
Dev also shared his thoughts on mentoring Mikhela: “Being a mentor is an absolute honour and privilege. Working with GIS is amazing, and having such a fantastic student like Mikhela is absolutely incredible.
“I feel very fortunate to work with someone so talented. This scholarship and mentorship scheme is one of the things that sets GIS apart from other institutions.”
The scholarship has also empowered Mikhela to inspire others who may be considering a career in sports. She highlighted the opportunities the scholarship offers, saying it’s “a great network and a fantastic way to support others like me who might not be sure if the sports industry is open to them.”
Mikhela described this year as her ‘yes year,’ embracing every opportunity to challenge herself: “I wanted to try everything I could.
“I didn’t think I was the kind of person who would usually get this role, but it just shows that if you put yourself out there and do your best, you never know what might happen. It’s been a great addition to my time studying here.”
As an online student, Mikhela also reflected on her experience at GIS so far:
“Every week looks different. I’m currently studying three modules, and while each is very specific, they’re also interconnected. I get to read and write about sports, immerse myself in video, audio, and podcasts—it’s a fantastic variety and a great way to learn.”
