UCFB and GIS are proud to celebrate the women of the sports industry this International Women’s Day.

Since the last International Women’s Day, on March 8, 2022, many women have provided inspiration to many young girls across the globe through sport.

Here, we are taking a look at just a few of these women who have achieved so much in sport over the last 12 months:

Sarina Weigman

Weigman did what many thought would never happen, and brought football home after guiding the England Women’s National Football Team to victory at Euro 2022.

She was awarded an honorary CBE for services to football after the success of the tournament.

Emma Hayes

Another women’s football coach, Hayes won her fifth Women’s Super League title as Chelsea boss in 2021-22, adding another Women’s FA Cup medal to her cabinet.

Also receiving an honour, Emma Hayes was made an OBE for services to association football.

Jessica Gadirova

The young gymnast sensation had an incredible year, winning eight gold medals at national and international competitions, including four gold medals on the floor events.

As she was turning 18, she won gold at the English Championships, British Championships, European Championships and ended 2022 winning gold at the World Championships.

She was named 2022’s BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year for her success.

Eve Muirhead

Scottish former curler Muirhead retired in the summer of 2022, after leading Team GB to their only gold medal at the 2022 Winter Olympic Games.

She was selected as skip for the Beijing tournament, and inspired her team to gold medal glory after winning bronze in 2014.

2022 also saw Eve victorious at the World Mixed Doubles Championships, before her retirement last August.

Beth Mead

Back where we started, at the Euro 2022 glory which has changed the face of women’s football in England.

Beth Mead ended the tournament as Golden Boot winner, as well as being top assist provider, and winning Player of the Tournament in the doing.

Her impressive performances saw her named England Player of the Year, BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year, World Soccer World Player of the Year and BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

She was also runner-up in the Ballon d’Or, UEFA Player of the Year and The Guardian 100 Best Footballers in the World.
