Located 144 km north of Sydney, the University of Newcastle is home to nearly 36,000 students. Recognised as one of Australia’s top regional universities, it consistently ranks among the world’s top 200 universities in the QS World University Rankings and offers 12 subjects ranked in the world’s top 200.
Officially established in 1965, the university traces its roots back to the 1950s, when Newcastle University College was created as an offshoot of the University of New South Wales. Today, the university houses several leading research institutes, including the Hunter Medical Research Institute, the Newcastle Institute for Energy and Resources, and the Central Coast Research Institute and Clinical School.
These institutes drive world-class research, with 95% of the university’s research rated at or above world standard. In STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medicine) fields—one of the university’s specialisms—this figure rises to 100%.
The university has earned the highest possible marks across 22 research fields from the Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) initiative. It has produced ground-breaking work, such as research aimed at reducing concussion risks in sport and the invention of the ‘hydro-harvester’—a device created by Professor Behdad Moghtaderi to extract drinkable water from air at a cost of less than five cents per litre. These contributions have secured the university a top 40 position in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings.
Students at the university benefit from outstanding employability outcomes, with 91% of graduates securing full-time employment within four months—the highest rate in New South Wales.
The university’s alumni network includes industry leaders across various fields. Notable graduates include:
With over 174,000 alumni in 154 countries, the university takes pride in its global reach and cultural diversity. It has a long history of collaboration with Indigenous Australian communities, exemplified by the Wollotuka Institute, which was established in 1983 to support Indigenous students. The university also promotes cultural inclusivity through its Cultural Capability Framework, a three-stage training program required for all staff.
Additionally, the University of Newcastle leads in gender equity, ranking 1st in Australia in this area and receiving five ‘Cygnet’ awards from Science in Australia Gender Equity (SAGE).
The university welcomes over 6,000 international students from 112 countries, many of whom are drawn to Australia’s renowned lifestyle of sun, sea and sport!
